Social Security benefits to increase 3.6% in 2027
Social Security recipients will see a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment in 2027, with retirement benefits increasing by an average of $75 per month, according to the Social Security Administration.
The increase will take effect in January for nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries. About 7.3 million people receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will see their increased payments beginning Dec. 31, 2026. Some individuals receive both types of benefits.
The adjustment affects approximately 76 million Americans receiving Social Security or SSI benefits. The annual cost-of-living adjustment, known as COLA, is based on changes in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, as determined by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Beneficiaries with personal my Social Security accounts can view their COLA notices online beginning in late November.
Those who wish to receive paperless notices must create an account and enroll by Nov. 18 at www.ssa. gov/myaccount.
Individuals who have not enrolled in paperless notices will receive their COLA information by mail in December.
The notices will provide each recipient’s updated benefit amount, payment dates and any applicable deductions.
Information about Medicare changes for 2027 will be available at www.medicare.gov.
Medicare premium amounts will also be included in benefit information available through my Social Security accounts beginning in late November.
