Outside of ABC Auto in Mineola on June 4, Fred Cruz stands beside a piece of family history: a 1956 Ford Thunderbird inherited from his father. Though the car was rarely driven during his father’s ownership, Cruz now keeps the classic on the road, taking it to shows and cruises across the region. Introduced as the second-year model of Ford’s Thunderbird line, the 1956 edition featured styling elements that became iconic among collectors, including its rear-mounted spare tire and distinctive porthole hardtop windows. Fewer than 16,000 of the 1956 models were produced, and Cruz said nearly everything on his remains original. The Thunderbird is now preparing for another road trip, this time to a major car show in Oklahoma. “This was my father’s, and he never drove it,” Cruz said. “I always said, well then let me drive it. When he passed away, I took it over, and now we drive it all around.”
