Police Chief John Farmer took a theft report from a person who advised someone had stolen her clothes from a dryer at the Laundry Room on E. Goode St. She advised she left to run an errand and there were several people in the laundry mat when she left. The laundry room had video surveillance. The clothes and linens were valued at $100. This case is under investigation.

May 12

Lt. Anita Tucker responded to a call at the Lone Star #6 Exxon convenience store on E. Goode St. at 9:02 p.m. where an employee reported hearing banging on the back door.  Tucker and a Wood County deputy went to the rear door and discovered that the doorknob had been knocked off and there was blood smeared on the door. It was discovered that it was done by a local juvenile, and he was located with a laceration on his hand. The juvenile was released to his mother, and a criminal mischief report was completed and turned in to Wood County Juvenile Probation.

May 18

Lt. Tucker responded to a report of a single vehicle crash involving a silver Ford Mustang at the corner of Richards St. and S. Main St. where the stop sign had been run over. Tucker found the wrecked vehicle abandoned at the back of Jim Hogg Park and later located the registered owner and made contact. This criminal mischief case is under further investigation.

Chief Farmer and officer Caitlyn Wilson served four warrants on Karen Adkins in the 700 block of Jeanell St. Adkins had three warrants for city ordinance violations for dogs running at large and one warrant for theft under $100. Adkins was transported to the Wood County Jail for book-in without incident.

May 27

Sgt. Clint Perkins and Officer Wilson responded to a theft report of a ladder and Scott’s fertilizer spreader on Nathan Dr. The person told responding officers that the two items were taken from the back yard. This theft is under investigation. 

June 3 

Officer Kevin Atkinson took a report of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle from one of the business owners at Bella Floral on W. Lipscomb St. The person advised that his 2014 Ford Mustang was parked behind his business the evening before.  Officer Atkinson was advised by Wood County Sheriff’s dispatch that a deputy had seen the vehicle parked at County Road 1306 and Hwy. 154 West. Atkinson and the person went to the location of the vehicle, and it was picked up. This case is under investigation.

Officer Atkinson took a credit card/debit card abuse report at the Quitman Police Department from a person who advised that there were unauthorized charges on her bank account and believes someone has been making charges on her debit card. The person advised Atkinson that she recently let a friend stay with her about the time the unauthorized charges showed up. This case is under investigation. 

Officer Atkinson responded to the Dogwood Villa storage buildings on Earlene Dr. where he met with a person and took a report. The person advised that there were four locks missing and another lock damaged. Quitman Realty was in the process of getting the storage owners to check their building and provide the police department with a detailed list of stolen items. This case is under investigation.

June 5

Sergeant Jefferey Baldwin was dispatched to a welfare check on Lance Road to the residence of Billy Edd Jones where he was found to be deceased. Chief Farmer was called and responded to the residence. Jones was 88 years of age and in his career had served as chief of police for the city of Quitman, chief deputy and sheriff for Wood County Sheriff’s Department. A memorial service for retired Sheriff Jones is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, June 18, 2021.
