Quitman opens district at home
The non-district slate is over and the 2-2 Quitman Bulldogs will be coming into District 8-3A D II play hosting the Edgewood Bulldogs. Edgewood is coming off a 10-3 playoff season in 2025.
Edgewood comes into the contest after trouncing Paris Chisum 49-6 in their district opener last Friday night. It was Edgewood’s first win of the season. Their 1-4 season record is quite deceiving. The early blow for Edgewood was in the off-season when All-State quarterback Trevor Golightly took his talents to Troup.
Losses were to Class 3A DI Malakoff who is currently undefeated and ranked fourth in the state. Other losses were to the state’s top-ranked Class 3A DII Troup, highly-ranked Cooper and to a Commerce team which lost a close one to Winnsboro last week.
In his three varsity years at Edgewood, Golightly had 8,633 passing yards and 2,093 rushing yards. Those yards had to be replaced. Although going 0-4 in non-district, three of the losses were to state-ranked teams and all four of those teams were in the playoffs last year.
Sophomore quarterback Caden Morris, number 17, has been gaining experience under fire. Morris has run for four scores and has tossed 14 TD passes so far this season. Morris leads the team in rushing, averaging 70.8 yards a game. He gets help in the ground game with running back Konner Paul who gets around 50 yards per game.
Head Coach Shane Webber is looking forward to the battle after having a bye week.
“We usually have our bye weeks late in the season. I really like having the early bye before district. We are healthy and I feel like we are ready for the challenge of district play,” Webber said.
“Edgewood’s record is very deceiving. Losing a quarterback like Golightly was tough, but they also lost a couple of linemen who moved. Their non-district schedule was one of the toughest in our district. They had really high hopes this year but they are still very good,” Webber said.
Webber then turned his attention to the Edgewood offense.
“They can put some points on the board. Their quarterback is doing a good job, and they have a really good running back. They also have some really good linebackers. They are a well-coached football team that does not make mistakes,” Webber said.
As to Webber’s thoughts on the Edgewood defense, he said that they “can really fly around the football.” Webber added that Edgewood is both very quick and athletic but said his team is prepared.
“This week we are in the best shape we have been in all year and we are ready,” Webber said.
According to Webber, the opportunity for success is there.
“If we can just do the things we have been working on with our defense like tackling in space and doing a better job of one-on-one tackling. If we can be consistent in what we do, we will be alright. If we can control the ball like we know we can, we have a good chance against them. Our intent is to keep the ball away from them as much as possible,” Webber said.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Bud Moody Field.
