Quitman ISD Board sets tax rate, budget, approves more gender neutral dress code
The Quitman ISD school board set a proposed tax rate after a public hearing at Monday night’s meeting.
The new tax rate was set at $1.14812 per $100 valuation for the 2021-22 school year and the upcoming budget was set at $14,823,100. Last year’s budget was $13,750,597 and the tax rate was $1.23.
In other business, the board approved campus improvement plans and student handbooks after presentations from campus principals. The student code of conduct was also approved.
There was little change in the student handbooks other than the dress code is now more “gender neutral.”
Board member James Hicks asked a question about gender neutral. “Does that mean boys can wear a dress?”
Quitman High School Principal Justin Cowart replied, “Yes, if they so choose and as long as it is within the dress code.”
The board approved $32,407 to Specialty Furniture for desks and tables at Quitman Elementary School (QES).
“All of our furniture is very old and outdated. We would like to update a little at a time, so this is for first and second grades,” QES Principal Brittany Eldred said. “We would like to continue updating two grades each year.”
In other action, the board unanimously approved the salary scale for teachers, counselors, nurses and librarians. The board approved an inter-local agreement between QISD and Wood County on tax collections. A board resolution for additional COVID-19 sick days was also approved.
