Quitman holiday events scheduled

Posted

For yet another year, Quitman’s Hometown Christmas event is set up to be a fun occasion. This idyllic Christmas event, which has been in the works for several years, is slated to include snow globe pictures, letters to Santa, a faux “snow” play zone (always a popular Christmas choice in balmy East Texas), a Winter Wonderland Walk, Christmas movies, vendors, food trucks and more.

There will also be a Christmas parade starting at 5 p.m.; following the parade, Quitman’s Jim Hogg City Park will feature a live nativity, cookie decorating, a petting zoo and “Santa Selfies.”

Hometown Christmas will be at Jim Hogg City Park from noon until 8 p.m. on Dec. 6.

Hometown Christmas will also include a house decorating contest. Categories include Brightest/Griswold (“Is it plugged in?”), Festive, Creative, Reason for the Season, Best in Show and Best Storefront. Judging will take place on Dec. 14, and winning homes will receive a $100 prize.

The season kicks off with the annual Tree Lighting event. The event will take place on Thanksgiving night at 8 p.m. and will include the tree lighting, followed by a storybook reading and rural Black Friday shopping in the downtown square.
