QISD construction projects ongoing despite rain
Dirt is flying on the Quitman school district’s construction projects, approved by voters last May.
Rainy weather has delayed the projects somewhat, but they remain on track, Superintendent Chris Mason said.
Mason updated the school board on the progress at Monday’s board meeting.
The board did approve asbestos abatement in the high school girls’ locker room for $49,500 as part of the construction project.
Trustees voted to develop a plan to address the new state requirement that all buses have seat belts with three-point harnesses by 2029.
The school district cannot afford the cost exceeding $2,000,000 to update 13 buses in one budget cycle, and the board agreed to develop a plan to meet the requirement by the deadline.
All districts are required to report their estimates to the state.
The board also approved employee pay for March 18, when a water main break forced the district to dismiss school. Any hourly-pay employee who lost time will be compensated.
Vicki Davis was honored with the Top Dog award for April for her assistance in serving meals during early release.
The board renewed the Capturing Kids Hearts teacher training program at a cost of $29,800 for the 2026-27 school year.
The board approved the firm of Rutherford Taylor to conduct the annual school financial audit for $27,750.
Mason reported enrollment is steady at 1,198 students, and revenues and expenditures are on track for April.
