QISD approves new flooring at elementary, buys bus
Quitman ISD board members approved $312,490 for new tile floors throughout Quitman Elementary School, including the current campus and new construction at its recent monthly meeting held Aug. 17.
Maintenance Director Cain McAllister made the presentation to the board concerning the purchase of the new flooring.
“We are going to purchase the materials upfront and then will be working on the installation during holidays and anytime school is not in session. We will most likely be working throughout the school year and into next summer to get completed,” McAllister said.
Mcallister added that the floor tiles will be the same throughout the buildings except in the library where they will lay new carpet.
Superintendent Chris Mason said the money will come from the fund balance.
The bid was awarded to Larry’s Interiors of Kilgore. Larry’s Interiors has been in business for 48 years and has done flooring work for many school districts and colleges in northeast Texas.
In other action, Assistant Superintendent Bryan Hurst presented the opportunity for the board to approve funds for a used passenger bus. The board approved $139,099 to purchase a 71-passenger Blue Bird bus with just 15,546 miles that could be delivered immediately.
In the superintendent’s report, Mason gave a positive update on district facilities.
"We're just rock n’ rolling right along. Things are coming along great at the elementary school. At the junior high, there is drywall work being done and we have been able to find room for new lockers which we need,” Mason said.
In another matter, the board approved a resolution granting extracurricular status to the 4-H organization along with an adjunct faculty agreement.
“The 4-H program has always been a great opportunity for our students,” Mason said.
Principals from each campus also presented improvement plans for their respective campuses. The board approved the district improvement plan following the presentations.
District Financial Director Kari Wilson reported tax collections were at 95.5%.
The Quitman ISD board meets every third Monday of the month at 6 p.m.
