QHS Bulldogs host, go 3-2 in tournament
The Quitman Bulldogs got in a lot of baseball in the final week before Spring Break, going 4-2 for the week.
After blasting North Hopkins 15-2 behind the two-hit pitching of Weston Pence on Tuesday, the Bulldogs went 3-2 while hosting their own tournament.
The tournament’s highlight was an 8-0 over Commerce where Tommy Drinkwine and Landon Richey combined to no-hit the Tigers. Drinkwine struck out eight for the win, and Richey struck out one for the save.
Freshman Davis Watson went 3-3 with Landon Green and Adam Belk each getting a pair of hits. Green had two runs batted in and Belk added one RBI.
Quitman defeated Saltillo 11-1 in the Bulldog’s opening win.
Carson Dickens got the win on the mound with Green coming in for the save. Dickens struck out eight batters. Dickens also had a 2-2 day at the plate. Richey came through with two hits and three RBI.
The Bulldogs fell to Lone Oak 2-1 in a pitcher’s duel. Canin Peppers took the loss but gave up only three hits and had five strikeouts. Green finished the game and recorded four strikeouts. Payton Sapp went 2-3 to lead the hitting for Quitman.
Quitman came back to beat Commerce for a second time 5-3. Watson struck out eight batters and earned the victory. Watson and Justin Matthews led the team offensively.
The final game on Saturday found the Bulldogs on the short end of a 13-1 game to a talented Harleton team.
The Bulldogs were back in action Tuesday for a district game with Mt. Vernon followed by a road game at Mt. Pleasant Chapel Hill on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
