Opening Day at the Quitman Pool

Over 100 swimmers cycled through the Quitman City Pool opening day last Saturday. The annual event, hosted by the Quitman/Lake Fork Kiwanis Club and the City of Quitman opened the swimming season with two hours of free swimming and a free hot dog lunch.
While the balance of swimmers were local, folks also came into Quitman from afar just to take part in the opening swim. The Kiwanis Club grilled hotdogs and sponsored lunch, while the Quitman Volunteer Fire Department augmented the regular lifeguards. Members of the Quitman High School Key Club worked concessions and handed out the lunch plates.
Quitman area resident Will McWhorter brought his son, Finn, and daughter, Matilda. McWhorter mentioned that in the past he had put up a small seasonal pool at home, but this year they would be coming to the City Pool.
The Cheek family came to the opening from Emory. It was their first visit to the Quitman Pool, and they smartly arrived early and secured use of a picnic table with a big shade umbrella.
Judging from the activity in the pool, the day was a great launch for the pool and the swimming season.
