Not enough candidates for appraisal board

Posted

Only three persons have been nominated to serve on the board of directors of the Wood County Appraisal District.

The district, which is responsible for assessing the value of all properties in the county for taxation purposes, is made up of the taxing entities in the county including school districts, incorporated cities, the county, and special districts such as hospital, emergency services and solid waste.

Each entity is entitled to make nominations for the five-member board for a two-year term.

The chief appraiser, Tracy Nichols, then prepares a ballot of all the nominees.

He received only three this year.

So the three nominees, Sam Curry, Al Harris and Ricky Cameron, will be elected to the board, leaving two vacancies.

Nichols said the board will then send letters to the members asking for nominations to fill those vacancies.

Nichols said this is the first time there have not been enough nominees to fill the five positions.

In the case of six or more nominations, the directors are selected in an election. The votes are determined by the amount of property taxes levied by each entity, divided among 5,000 votes.

Wood County received 1,753 votes, and county commissioners split their votes one-third for each candidate.
