Mineola players, coach compete in FCA contests
Mineola was well-represented at the Northeast Texas Fellowship of Christian Athletes Heart of Champions athletic competitions June 4-5.
Athletic Director Luke Blackwell served as head coach for the winning Red team in Saturday night’s football game. In a lightning-delayed game, Blackwell’s Red squad came from behind to capture a last minute win over the Blue squad, 22-21, at Tyler’s Rose Stadium.
Former Yellowjacket stand-out football players Dawson Elmore, Kobe Kendrick and Hunter Wright logged significant playing time for the winning side. Blackwell’s position as head coach at the all-star game allowed him to bring with him his offensive and defensive coordinators, Aaron Slider and Heath Ragle.
The annual FCA competition may climax with an all-star football game, but the competition also includes baseball, softball, cheer and soccer.
Mineola softballer Alana Galaz and soccer captain Nathan Rojas also competed in their respective sports as a final cap to their excellent athletic careers.
Blackwell described the value of the FCA summer competition as a chance to build lasting relationships with athletes who share in the good word of the Gospels.
“The FCA provides yet another opportunity to mentor and testify before these outstanding young men and women,” Blackwell explained. “I have personally benefitted from the lasting relationships fostered through the FCA and hope that sharing my experiences has contributed to others’ sense of worth and calling.”
The FCA, founded in 1954, uses sports as a vehicle to share the message of Christianity. The FCA operates internationally and counts 25,000 participants in their sports camps worldwide.
