Mineola Nature Preserve hosting kids fish event

Posted

On Saturday, Feb. 7, Bridge Bob’s Pond at the Mineola Nature Preserve will be the site of the annual “Kids’ Trout Fishing Day.”

The event, which is sponsored by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) and the City of Mineola, will run from 9 a.m. to noon. The event is free to area youth and adult fishing mentors, and no fishing license is required. There is no entrance fee for entering the preserve.

TPWD will stock a thousand rainbow trout in the pond.

Anglers are encouraged to bring a light-action rod and reel combo with small fishing hooks, light line (12 lb. test or less), small bobbers and small split shot, and bait. Whole kernel corn, salmon eggs, marshmallows, small worms, Berkley PowerBait, and small spinners are generally favorite baits for trout. TPWD and volunteers will be on hand to help with fishing, and to provide loaner rod, reels, and some bait.
