You may have noticed that last week’s column wasn’t about the Mineola Memorial Library—it featured the Quitman Public Library instead. If you caught that, give yourself a high-five! Quitman has a wonderful library with many services similar to ours, along with some unique offerings of its own. We encourage you to visit both libraries and take advantage of all they have to offer.
Our Summer Reading Program has come to a close, and what a wonderful six weeks it has been! Our young readers logged at least 13,300 minutes of reading. Stop by the library and check out Herman, whose colorful circular scales proudly display their accomplishments. We’re especially proud of the three children who completed the 2,500-minute Reading Challenge!
Now we enter one of the quieter seasons at the library. It’s the perfect time to browse our book displays for your next great read or enjoy one of our passive programs—activities you can do on your own, without a group or instructor.
As we catch our breath, we’re also gathering ideas for our fall programming. Do you have a suggestion? We’d love to hear it! Would you enjoy a weekly lecture series? Is there a game or craft you’ve always wanted to learn? Would you be interested in a book club focused on a favorite genre instead of a variety of titles?
Since we’re guessing many adults are reading this column, we’d also love to know what programs you’d like to see for your children. For any of these ideas, let us know what days of the week or times of day work best during our regular hours.
A heartfelt thank-you goes to the volunteers who helped make our Summer Reading Program such a success. Lou, Beth, Patricia, Ellen, and Jenn were all amazing! They may not think they did much, but their time and dedication made a tremendous difference. We’d also like to thank Spencer, who has faithfully shown up each week to help with just about everything. And a special thanks goes to the Pace Setters Leadership Camp participants, who spent time cleaning up one of our neglected garden beds.
We are still not accepting donations of books, movies, or magazines, but we are always grateful for monetary donations. We know many of you are wondering when we’ll hold another book sale. The answer is: as soon as the schedule—and the Texas weather—cooperate! Please watch our Texas Facebook page or visit mineolalibrary.com for updates.
Finally, remember that the Mineola Memorial Library is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, so your monetary donations may be tax-deductible. Thank you for your continued support of your community library!
