Mineola suffered its second straight district loss as Mount Vernon rolled to a 71-7 victory at Don Meredith Stadium. The Tigers improved to 4-2, while the Yellowjackets fell to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in district play.
Mount Vernon scored on its first play from scrimmage when Jackson Gray raced 66 yards for a touchdown. The Tigers converted the two-point attempt for an 8-0 lead. They added four more touchdowns to take a 36-0 lead in the second quarter and controlled the game the rest of the way.
The Tigers’ ground game was in high gear, rushing for 372 yards on the night.
Mineola’s Braelyn Geremonte ran for 158 yards on 15 carries, averaging 10.5 yards per attempt, including a 59-yard run. The Yellowjackets finished the night with 400 yards of total offense, including 155 passing yards.
Despite the loss, Mineola remains in the hunt for a playoff spot with four district games remaining. The district sends four teams to the playoffs.
Following this week’s bye, the Yellowjackets return home to face Rains on Oct. 16.
Mineola has already faced third-ranked Malakoff and a strong Mount Vernon team. The Yellowjackets’ remaining schedule also includes a matchup with seventh-ranked Winnsboro.
Rains enters the matchup at 2-4 overall and 1-1 in district play. The Wildcats fell to Malakoff 57-2 last Friday after opening district play with a 57-29 win over Eustace.
Rains’ other losses came against Live Oak Cliff, 69-12; Grand Saline, 55-15; and Howe, 31-21.
After facing Mineola, the Wildcats will continue district play against Commerce and Winnsboro.
