Low voter turnout decides primary runoff elections
Low voter turnout helped decide the outcome of the May 26 primary runoff elections in Wood County.
According to the latest available voter registration figures from the Texas Secretary of State, Wood County has more than 34,000 registered voters.
On the Democratic ballot, fewer than 250 voters cast ballots in races for lieutenant governor and attorney general.
For lieutenant governor, 189 voters selected Vicky Goodwin (77.78%), with only 54 votes (22.22%) going to opponent Marcos Isaias Velez. In the attorney general race, Nathan Johnson received 124 votes (51.45%), narrowly defeating Joe Jaworski, who garnered 117 votes (48.55%).
Republican turnout was significantly higher.
In the race for U.S. senator, 3,347 voters chose Ken Paxton, while 1,365 voted for John Cornyn. Paxton received 71.03% of the vote, compared with Cornyn’s 28.97%.
For attorney general, 2,728 Republican voters selected Mays Middleton, while 1,957 voted for Chip Roy. Middleton earned 58.23% of the vote, while Roy received 41.77%.
The race for railroad commissioner was much closer. Jim Wright received 2,353 votes, or 51.83%, while Beau French garnered 2,187 votes, or 48.17%.
In the race for Place 3 on the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, Thomas Smith received 2,931 votes, or 67%, while Allison Fox received 1,443 votes, or 33%.
The general election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 3.
