Local artisans Charles and Sarah Adams demonstrated traditional metalworking techniques Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Winnsboro Historical Museum, located in the town’s former train depot.
The husband-and-wife team, owners of Shadow Hawk Blades in Winnsboro, set up a portable forge near the railroad tracks to show visitors how metal is heated, shaped and bent into useful and decorative items.
Charles tended the gas forge while Sarah worked at the anvil, using bending forks and wrenches to shape the metal. The couple also displayed examples of their work, including handcrafted knives, custom handles and fitted leather sheaths.
Charles has worked with metal for 45 years, while Sarah has 20 years of experience. In addition to making items for sale, the couple offers individual and small-group classes.
The demonstration gave visitors a chance to watch the metalworking process and learn about a trade that has been practiced for centuries.
The demonstration was part of Winnsboro’s annual Autumn Trails celebration, which features events and activities throughout October. The festival marked its 65th anniversary in 2023.
Activities continue Friday, Oct. 16, with the Trail Riders Welcome Parade. Events scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 17, include a pancake breakfast, 42 tournament, trail ride, WRA Mule Rodeo and barn dance.
Autumn Trails also features self-guided driving tours through the countryside of Wood and Franklin counties, including Peckerwoods Flats and portions of the Texas Forest Trail. The routes take visitors along rural roads through the Piney Woods and surrounding lake areas.
Other festival activities throughout October include parades, rodeos, live music, arts and crafts, contests and other community events.
