To the editor:

It has been my distinct pleasure to serve as mayor of Mineola these past four years. During my time as mayor, I have been able to appreciate with a unique perspective the tremendous amount of volunteerism in our community. Our community’s heartbeat is found in our volunteers.

Volunteers are seen everywhere. From those who sit on all the various types of boards, whether they are civic, business, educational, recreational or government, these people’s values and hard work help mold our community into what it is. Don’t forget all those who coach little kids, work with young readers or young at heart artists, fund-raise for our students, put on community events, and make sure the things we enjoy about our community the most are available. It doesn’t matter whether you take part in the recreational activities available, appreciate the art and history found in the Mineola area or just enjoy downtown, a group of volunteers most likely made that happen. And when our community is in need, these volunteers step up and provide food through different organizations, make sure kids have school supplies or sometimes a pair of shoes or a pair of glasses.

In closing, we need you to be part of the process. Whoever and where ever you are, find your passion and volunteer to serve in your community. I know they will appreciate the help.

Again, thank you for having the trust in me to serve you these past four years as mayor.
