Lady Panthers sweep Fruitvale
The Alba-Golden Lady Panthers registered a straight-set win over the visiting Lady Bobcats of Fruitvale last Friday (25-20, 25-11, 25-18).
The win gave the Lady Panthers a 4-2 mark in district. Alba-Golden is tied with Como-Pickton in second place. Each team is chasing the undefeated North Hopkins side in district 12-2A, having split their season series when Como-Pickton won in four games last Tuesday.
The first set belonged to Lady Panther Lainey Wright. The senior tallied six kill shots. Her play at the net was aggressive and smart, with Wright directing a number of shots at exactly the small unguarded gaps in the Bobcat defense.
Wright wrapped up the first set with consecutive aces.
She was joined in the opening offensive onslaught by Lainey Teel (4 kills, 1 block), Alexis Wilmut (2 kills), Campbell Shrum (1 kill) and a combined emphatic block by Teel and Averi Stevenson.
Alba-Golden continued their solid play in the second set. It was the consistency of Stevenson and the continued effectiveness of Wright which shaped this set.
Fruitvale galvanized their efforts in the third set but could never overtake the Lady Panthers, who led throughout. Just when it appeared that the visitors would challenge the lead, the Lady Panthers regained the service.
Teel paced the Lady Panthers in the final set with three kills, one block and an ace.
Alba-Golden hosts Yantis on Friday before finishing district play on Tuesday, Oct. 29 when they host North Hopkins.
