The Mineola Lady Jackets took advantage of some early fielding errors by the visiting Quitman Lady Bulldogs to record a 3-0 win last Tuesday.

After Mineola starter Jadelyn Marshall put the Lady Bulldogs down in order in the top half, the Lady Jackets put two runs up in the bottom of the first.

A base on balls, three fielding errors and a passed ball combined to allow the first two Lady Jackets in the line-up – Caroline Castleberry and Gracie Lindley – to cross the plate. Well-placed bunts by Marshall and Jaycee Smith put the ball in play.

The Jackets threatened again in the second, when Castleberry reached on a walk and advanced on a fielder’s choice. With two away, Smith sent a sharp come-backer up the middle. Quitman’s Kennedi Elmore knocked the ball down on the mound and pegged a nice throw to the plate to get Castleberry.

The Lady Bulldogs generated some excitement in the third and fourth innings but could not rally. In the third, Addison Marcee slapped a ball over the head of Mineola left-fielder Lindley. Marcee used her speed to leg-out a triple. She was stranded at third.

In the fourth Larken Spears led off with a stand-up double as she smacked a sharp line drive into the left-center field gap. She was gunned down at third on a great throw from Smith to third baseman Maddie Short.

Mineola generated a run in the bottom of the fourth. Jorja Young reached after getting hit by a pitch. Castleberry walked, and both advanced on a fielder’s choice when Lindley laid down a nice bunt. Young came home on a passed ball.

Two defensive gems kept the crowd entertained. In the top of the fifth Castleberry had a beautiful scoop on a throw that skipped in from third on a close play.

In the top of the seventh Spears golfed a single into short right field to open the inning. Elmore hit a sharp two-hopper to the second-base side of shortstop. The Lady Jackets took advantage and turned a classic 6-4-3 double play.

With two outs in the seventh, Quitman’s Ashley Davis reached on a walk and Allie Berry lined a single into right. When the throw came back into the infield, the Jackets took it to second to get Berry. Davis kept rounding the bases. It was a close play at the plate, with Smith taking a great throw and just nicking Davis on her left hip as she extended to reach the plate.

Both hurlers – Mineola’s Marshall and Quitman’s Elmore – had good starts. Marshall generated 14 ground-ball outs, while Elmore recorded nine strike-outs.

Tuesday, March 21 will be the next opportunity to catch either team at home. Mineola will host Harmony and Quitman will entertain Winona.
