Joyce Galyean Campbell 1937 – 2026

Posted

Joyce’s parents Cordes L. Galyean and Roberta Bullock were married June 16, 1935.  Joyce was the first of three daughters born to the couple.  She was born in Alba on Aug. 7, 1937 at the home of her maternal grandparents, who lived just down the road from her parents.  Her paternal grandparents lived just down the road in the opposite direction.  The family moved to Camp Chemical (Clute, Texas) in 1943, when her father went to work for the developing Dow Chemical Company.

Joyce grew up in Clute and graduated from Brazosport High School.  After moving to Tyler, she sharpened her secretarial skills while attending Tyler Business School.  Her first job was with Tyler’s Chrysler Dealership.  She then moved to Austin, where she worked at the University of Texas in the Teacher Placement Department.  Most of Joyce’s working career was in northeast Texas.  She retired from what is now known as AT&T after a lengthy career.

From an early age, Joyce was involved in her church, and after moving to Brazoria to help her ailing mother, she taught the Ladies Sunday School class at the First Baptist Church of Brazoria.

She traveled many miles with her bowling club tournaments, and visited cemeteries to pursue her love of genealogy.  She served as secretary of her family reunions for many years.  Joyce was an avid reader and also enjoyed working with ceramics, crocheting, needlework and quilting.  She even taught one of her grand-nieces how to knit!

Joyce passed away on Saturday, Jan. 10 at her home.  She is survived by sisters Janell Lowe and Sandra Losack of Brazoria; nieces Judy Jackson (Ronnie) of College Station and Sherry Blue (Alex) of Pipe Creek, and nephew Billy Losack (Misty); 16 grand-nieces/nephews; and a very dear friend, Jackie Burke of Brazoria.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Cordes and Roberta Galyean, and brothers-in-law, Gene Lowe and Billy Losack.

Celebration of Life services will be held at the First Baptist Church of Brazoria on Saturday, Jan. 24. The visitation will be at 11 a.m., and will be followed by the service at noon.  Interment will follow at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 26, at Enon Cemetery near Alba.

Pallbearers will be her nephews, grand-nephews, great-nephews and special family members.
