Hawkins downed by fourth-ranked Carlisle
The Hawkins Hawks found out why Carlisle is undefeated and ranked fourth in Class 2A as the Indians handed Hawkins a 55-8 loss.
The Hawks fell to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in district play.
A stout Carlisle defense never allowed Hawkins to get its offense going. The Indians held the Hawks scoreless until the fourth quarter and built a 42-0 lead.
Carlisle quarterback Antonio Ibarra threw for 184 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 60 yards and two scores. Elvis Hernandez added 57 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Hawkins entered the contest averaging 44 points per game but was held to just 105 yards of total offense, including 57 rushing and 48 passing.
Carlisle kept the Hawks under pressure throughout the night, recording six sacks and three interceptions. The Indians also scored on a fumble return by Javier Enriquez. Zander Castleberry recorded two of Carlisle’s six sacks.
“You can’t give a team like Carlisle many turnovers or it’s going to give them opportunities to score. We will put this one away and get ready to play Como-Pickton after our bye week,” Head Coach Bill Cowley said.
The Carlisle defense also kept Hawkins quarterback Eli Smith under pressure and prevented the Hawks from finding the offensive rhythm that had helped them average 44 points through their first five games.
Hawkins has a bye this week before returning to district action at home against Como-Pickton on Oct. 9.
The Eagles are 4-2 overall and 1-1 in District 10-2A Division II. Como-Pickton opened the season with a 19-6 loss to Quitman before reeling off three consecutive wins over Wolfe City, 27-21; Cumby, 28-8; and Maud, 42-6.
The Eagles then fell to Frankston, 49-16, before responding with a 37-0 shutout of Cayuga.
Como-Pickton is averaging 26 points per game while allowing 17.2 points per contest.
The Hawks and Eagles will both be looking for a district win as they continue their push for a playoff spot.
