The Golden Sweet Potato Festival returns to East Texas Oct. 20-24, bringing five days of pageant traditions, live music, agricultural competitions and family entertainment to celebrate Golden’s legacy as the self-proclaimed “Sweet Potato Capital of the World.”
First established in 1982, the festival brings together residents, alumni and local churches while raising funds for community projects across Wood County.
“What makes the Golden Sweet Potato Festival so special is seeing just how much this small community comes together to support one another. There’s a lot of history and tradition behind the festival, but the heart of it has always been the people. Seeing everyone show up, pitch in, visit, and support the community is truly something special to witness,” Golden Sweet Potato Festival Board President Chelsea Oliver said.
Morgan Ragan, a festival board member, added that the annual celebration serves as a local homecoming.
“The festival means so much to so many. People literally come out of the woodwork for it. You never know what you’ll see or what you’ll get from the festival. We’re just excited to see the growth and the hard work that so many put in behind the scenes. It truly is the most wonderful time of the year in Golden, TX,” Ragan said.
Proceeds from the festival, including Saturday’s Sweet Potato Benefit Auction, go back into the community. Funds help pay for a new playground on the festival grounds, scholarships for graduating Alba-Golden seniors, local youth agricultural programs, matching funds for student booth earnings and assistance for local families in need.
“The festival gives back to our community in so many ways. The money raised really does come back around to support the people and organizations in our community,” Oliver said.
This year’s festival includes longtime traditions along with some new entertainment.
Pageant activities begin Tuesday, Oct. 20, with the Little Miss Golden Sweet Potato Pageant, themed “The Farmer in the Dell,” and continue Thursday, Oct. 22, with division pageants under the theme “American Honey.”
Saturday brings the new Rotten Tater Pageant along with returning events, including the downtown parade at 10 a.m., the Sweet Potato Benefit Auction at noon, a car show and an antique tractor pull.
Other events throughout the week include a community church service, Friday night mutton bustin’ and Gospel Night, a 5K fun run, the Sweet Potato Baking Contest, live entertainment under the pavilion and a Saturday evening concert by Line 5.
When asked what visitors shouldn’t miss, Oliver had a simple answer.
“Everything! You really don’t want to miss a thing. So much work goes into every event, and each one is special in its own way. We always try to have something new each year, but sometimes the best parts aren’t even planned. It may. just be some spur-of-the-moment shenanigans under the pavilion. That’s part of the fun: you never quite know what might happen,” Oliver said.
