Quitman High School went head-to-head with Edgewood High in a thrilling “Bulldog Showdown” Friday with both teams continuing their district football seasons. Edgewood prevailed 42-14.

Edgewood dominated the first quarter, scoring two touchdowns and converting both extra points to take a 14-0 lead.

Quitman found its rhythm in the second quarter, responding with 44 hard-fought yards. With just one yard left, Jacob Breding dove into the end zone to secure Quitman’s first touchdown. However, their attempt at a two-point conversion fell just inches short.

Edgewood extended the lead with two more touchdowns, again making both extra points. By halftime, Edgewood was up by 22 points, but Quitman remained determined, keeping their hopes alive for a comeback in the second half.

The second half began with Quitman maintaining high hopes, but Edgewood, riding the momentum from the first half, struck again with another touchdown and a successful extra point, extending their lead to 35-6.

Quitman responded with grit, pushing hard in search of a breakthrough. In the fourth quarter, quarterback Klayton Meadows handed the ball off to Breding, who powered through for a 9-yard run up the middle, capping it with a touchdown. Driven by the score, Quitman successfully executed a two-point conversion, narrowing the deficit.

However, Edgewood regained possession and quickly added another touchdown, sealing their victory with a conversion. As the final whistle blew, the scoreboard read 42-14.

After the game, the Quitman Bulldogs huddled together for a post-game talk from Coach Shane Webber, determined to regroup for the next challenge ahead.

“Take it one game at a time,” he said. “We don’t need to get down from losing one game. Losing once doesn’t get you out of the ring, making it a habit is what can hurt us.”
