Disbanded group donates funds for Lake Holbrook
Wood County commissioners received a $5,218 donation from the Friends of Lake Holbrook Association (as the organization has closed). The letter from the group’s board stated they wanted the funds used for the betterment of the lake area.
Precinct 2 Commissioner Jerry Gaskill said, “I hate to see this group close. I have worked with them on so many things. They have made so many improvements at Lake Holbrook including lighting, picnic tables, barbecue pits and even planting trees. They will be missed.”
Commissioners approved the Wood County Historical Commission’s annual report. Three members were appointed to the commission: Fred Morrow of Quitman, Sherry Finney of Winnsboro and Jerry Tinney of Golden.
Members gave a recap of the busy year. One of the year’s big projects was examining, organizing and sorting school records from the Wood County Common Schools. A program about the common schools was given to a packed community room at the Quitman library in September. Lupita Wisener informed commissioners that Wood County has more state historical markers than any other county. Commission members also worked 2,622 volunteer hours in 2022.
Emily Hussman, Lindsey Wagner and Katie Degrozita gave the annual report from the Wood County Extension Office. They spoke about the many activities in the extension office offers, including the Wood County Master Gardeners.
