Commissioners set procedures to fill constable vacancy

Wood County commissioners have established procedures for filling the vacancy of Precinct Two constable.

Bobby Tucker resigned effective Oct. 10.

Commissioners declared the position vacant on Tuesday and set a deadline of Oct. 21 for persons interested in filling the post to send resumes/applications. They should be turned in to the commissioners office in Quitman.

Commissioners plan to review applications and to make an appointment on Oct. 31.

That person will serve until the votes for the general election are canvassed in November 2026.

The remainder of the term, for two years, will be on the ballot beginning with the March 3, 2026 party primaries.

The filing period for the primaries gets underway on Nov. 8 and runs for 30 days.

The winner (or winners) of the primaries will appear on the general election ballot in November 2026, and the general election winner can be sworn into office immediately after the votes are canvassed by commissioners.

While commissioners have said they plan to appoint someone with a peace officer license, persons running in the election do not have to be licensed officers.

However, if a person wins who does not hold a license, they must obtain one within 270 days of being sworn in – a requirement which led to Tucker’s resignation.
