Bulldogs split games against Grand Saline
The Quitman Bulldogs mirrored the path of the Quitman girls softball team last week, splitting their games in identical fashion – dropping a tough one at home before turning things around with a gritty road win. The Bulldogs fell 14-1 on Tuesday, then responded with a 7-6 comeback victory on Friday to even the series with Grand Saline.
Tuesday’s opener got away from the Bulldogs early and quickly. After Quiitman trailed by only two over the first two innings, Grand Saline unleashed a nine-run streak that proved insurmountable for the Bulldogs.
Bright spots were few for the Bulldogs. Quitman managed four hits, with leadoff man Canin Peppers setting the tone with two. Even as the deficit grew, the Bulldogs continued to battle at the plate, drawing walks and forcing long at-bats. Still, Grand Saline’s onslaught of runs in the third inning proved too much for the night.
Quitman shifted the momentum Friday when they took the field in Grand Saline. The Bulldogs showed resilience from the first pitch but had to grind through a back-and-forth contest that tested their composure. After briefly grabbing an early lead, they found themselves trailing 6-5 entering the final inning. The Bulldogs managed to rally and delivered when it counted the most.
A key double sparked the rally before Jimmy Mulllican lifted a sacrifice fly that brought home two runs, flipping the game in the seventh. Peppers led the offensive charge with three hits, consistently putting pressure on the defense. The Bulldogs racked up 12 hits overall, with multiple players contributing throughout the lineup. Logan Davis anchored the middle of the order and drove in three runs while also earning the win on the mound with a strong relief performance, striking out eight and allowing no earned runs over five innings. The Bulldogs also drew six walks and forced mistakes.
