Best resigns as director of MISD bands
Mineola’s award-wining band program is in search of a new leader following the resignation of Fine Arts Director Jim Best, announced at Monday’s Mineola School Board meeting.
Best has directed the band program the past four years, taking the Sound of the Swarm to the state marching finals in 2023, 2024 and 2025, winning a silver medal and the last two championships.
He previously served with former director Chris Brannan, who led the band to its first three championships in 2017, 2019 and 2021, then led the Winnsboro program to its first state appearance before returning to Mineola.
In his resignation letter, Best said he and his family will remain in Mineola ISD, where he will be pursuing another career field.
Superintendent Cody Mize said the district will begin the search for a new director soon.
Also during the series of presentations for student achievement, the band program was recognized for winning that fifth state championship.
Band members passed out state medals to the board members and administrators.
Mize said most people would call five championships a dynasty.
Assistant Director Donald Myers said that not only do the students work hard to continue an amazing tradition of excellence, but they are also great ambassadors for Mineola High School and the community, being respectful and kind to those they meet.
