Area schools sprint in district track meets
The Alba-Golden girls have another title, the Class 2A District 19 track crown. Led by a sweep of the 4x100-meters, 4x200-meters and 4x400-meter relays, the Lady Panthers eclipsed the second-place Frankston team by 33 points to claim the district track championship last Thursday.
The 4x100-meter team included Allyie Gilliam, Averi Stevenson, Jayla Sitar and Braelyn Massie. They logged a 50.88 time. Sadie Wright replaced Stevenson in the 4x200-meters, and the team finished in 1:48.29. The 4x400-meter team – Campbell Shrum, Shaylee Threlkeld, Jayla Sitar and Braelyn Massie – recorded a blue-ribbon time of 4:13.59.
Stevenson and Massie also made big contributions by winning the 200-meter dash (Stevenson in 27.84) and the long jump (Massie at 16-1.50 feet). Both athletes had busy days: Stevenson also placed second in the 100-meter dash and fourth in the long jump; while Massie finished second in the triple jump. She tied teammate Harlow Sauceman with an effort of 31’2.50”.
Other top-four finishers for Alba-Golden were Sauceman (4-6 in the high jump, a height shared with teammate Gilliam), Brianna Ringgold (2:41.18 in the 800-meter run), Threlkeld (15:31.34 in the 3200-meter run), Sitar (7-0 in the pole vault) and Dorothy Collins (54.75, the 300-meter hurdles).
The Alba-Golden boys had a strong showing, finishing in third place behind Frankston and Cayuga.
Freshman Ethan Allen won the 3200-meter run with a time of 11:57.99. He also finished third in the 1600-meter run. Taylor Wright won the discus throw with a toss of 117’5”. Layton Williams took the shot put event with a put of 42-2.
Additional boys team, top-four finishers were Kayden Massie (11.49 in the 100-meter dash), Brett Sutton (2:13.75 in the 800-meter run), Coplen Tunnel (9-0 in the pole vault), Memphis Martinez (55.64 in the 400-meter dash), and Cooper Christian (44.18 in the 300-meter hurdles).
The 4x400-meter relay team of Sam Leddy, Daidrian Green, Sutton and Massie recorded a second-place finish with a time of 3:34.69. Third-place finishes were logged by the 4x200-meter relay of Leddy, Green, Sutton and Christian, and the 4x100-meter relay of Green, Massie, Martinez and Leddy.
Also last week, the athletes of class 3A District 15 were competing for their district title in Eustace. The Mineola and Quitman girls teams placed third and fourth, respectively in a field of six teams. The Quitman and Mineola boys teams finished in fourth and seventh place, respectively.
Lady Jackets and Lady Bulldogs captured a number of blue ribbons in Eustace. Event winners were Raylie Peebles (2:21.43 in the 800-meter run), Annabelle Hollingquest (5-2 in the high jump), Canyon Redding (35-5.25 in the triple jump), Tierany Neighbors (11-0 in the pole vault) and Shyli Rushing (36-5 in the shot put). Peebles also qualified for area competition in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:02.85. Quitman’s Braleigh Wood joined Peebles by qualifying for the 400-meter dash (1:02.57) and the 800-meter run (2:23.72)
The Mineola sprinters Amera Caldwell, Stephanie Rojas, Tierany Neighbors and Leighlah Wilson won the 4x200-meter relay in a time of 1:47.66. Neighbors, Rojas and Wilson joined Peebles to win the 4x400-meter relay, logging a time of 4:11.56. The Lady Jacket 4x100-meter relay of Caldwell, Adelyn Steward, Jaylee Nevarez and Khloe Johnson took third place with a time of 52.63.
Additional competitors from Mineola qualifying for this week’s area meet were Stephanie Rojas (27.26 in the 200-meter dash), Juliane Hoff (5:44.21 in the 1600-meter run), Khloe Johnson (16.54 in the 100-meter hurdles) and Mahayla McMahon (4-10 in the high jump).
Additional competitors from Quitman qualifying for this week’s area meet were Cooper Marcee (49.58 in the 300-meter hurdles), Laine Kelly (17-3.75 in the long jump), Annabelle Hollinquest (110-11 in the discus) and Annabelle Popek (30-9 in the shot).
Two Mineola male athletes captured blue ribbons at the 3A-15 district meet. Ainsley Steward took the high jump with a leap of 6-2, and Chance Williams vaulted 12-6 to win the pole vault.
Quitman boys top-four finishers were Dakota Reynolds (22.61 in the 200-meter dash), Colsten Smith (16.07 in the 110-meter hurdles and 43.76 in the 300-meter hurdles), Drake Hughes (42.43 in the 300-meter hurdles) and Cameron Kelley (124-11 in the discus).
Mineola high-jumper Zane Strange also qualified with a jump of 6-2.
The Quitman team of Credence Runyon, Juan Olvera, Mark Sanders III and Drake Hughes qualified in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 44.94. Runyon, Olvera and Sanders were joined by Dakota Reynolds to qualify in the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:31.62. The Quitman 4x400-meter relay of Sanders, Colsten Smith, Olvera and Hughes logged a time of 3:30.76 and will run at area.
Mineola’s 4x200-meter team of Ainsley Steward, Eduardo Guerra, Ethan Vigueras and Eric Casper qualified with a time of 1:32.28.
The area championship meet for both local 2A and 3A schools will be held Thursday, April 16. The 2A meet will be run at Madisonville and the 3A meet in West Rusk. The top four finishers from district will compete. The regional meets will be conducted May 1-2 at Palestine for 2A and Whitehouse for 3A.
