Arboretum hosting Christmas open house Thursday
Add a special twinkle to the holidays next week with a visit to the Wood County Arboretum and Botanical Gardens’ Christmas Open House.
Seasonal touches being added to the venue should make a visit to the 1869 Stinson House a festive experience that should not be missed, said Deanna Caldwell, president of Friends of the Arboretum, which oversees the grounds.
The arboretum is recognized as Quitman Chamber of Commerce business of the month, and organizers said they are pleased to share the beauty of the venue, not just for the holidays, but all year.
“We want to thank the community and local businesses for supporting us in our fundraising efforts this year,” Caldwell said. “We met our goals to raise enough to replace the surface of the George Bridge and build a metal equipment storage facility. The George Bridge project has already been completed, and we are taking bids to construct the building. This event is our way of saying thank you and paying it back a little.”
This unique holiday event is set for 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11 on the grounds of the arboretum, 175 Governor Hogg Pkwy. and features live music and refreshments.
“The theme – gardens – will feature live greenery and natural décor,” Caldwell said. “Plus, we’ll have a generous finger food buffet of holiday foods and desserts, as well as hot and cold beverages, all accompanied by classic Christmas piano tunes.”
Festivities are free and open to the public, although donations are always welcome and appreciated, organizers said.
This year the open house will also feature new eye-catching, branded gift shop items and plants that can make perfect stocking stuffers.
The arboretum is comprised of a 23-acre venue, which features a walking trail, tribute plantings and themed gardens. Volunteers maintain the grounds and hold special events to raise money for special projects and routine maintenance.
