Yellowjackets blow past Chapel Hill, 19-2
The visiting Chapel Hill Red Devils jumped out to a 2-0 lead in last Tuesday’s district game when the Yellowjackets unleashed their hitters on Red Devil pitching. Mineola racked up 18 base hits in a 19-2 win.
The score may be deceiving. The Chapel Hill pitching was not offering up batting practice. The Mineola hitters were simply spring-loaded and very focused. They blistered the ball. Each Yellowjacket starter had at least one base hit, with Riley Fowler going 4 for 4, Braydon Alley and Spencer Joyner each going 3 for 4, and Coy Anderson 2 for 2.
Indicative of the hitting performance on the night is the manner in which the Jackets scored. In their big 9-run second inning, Alley and Joyner stroked consecutive base hits. In the third Anderson, Fowler, Casen Davis and Caleb Gant notched consecutive base hits. Alley clobbered a triple in the fourth to drive in the last runs of the night.
It was a cool night punctuated often by the sharp sound of aluminum sending leather-covered balls all over the diamond, usually on a line.
For Mineola, Jack Heard, Davis and Alley combined to hold Chapel Hill to four hits over five innings.
The Jackets are tuning up for a strong run at district.
