August 25

Deputy McKenzie Chandler was dispatched to Hwy. 69 for a burglary of a vehicle. The window to the vehicle was broken to gain entry. Another report of a burglary of a vehicle came in at this location. Deputy Chandler spoke with the owner, who stated her window was also smashed and items taken. Deputy Matthew Cooper responded to CR 2724 for a burglary of a vehicle. The reporting party stated someone smashed the window of her vehicle and stole multiple items. Cooper took another report of a burglary of a vehicle on CR 2724. The reporting party stated her car window was busted out and numerous items taken from the vehicle.

The Wood County Sheriff’s Office is asking all citizens of the county to keep their vehicles locked and all valuables out of site.

Sgt. Heather Bailey assisted another agency on FM 514. She learned that an individual had passed at the location. A justice of the peace and funeral home were contacted.

Deputy Amanda Dollison took a lobby report of harassment. The party informed Dollison that her neighbor has been coming over to her residence accusing her of different things. She just wished to have the incidents on file in case something came up later.

Sgt. Bailey went to CR 4596 for a burglary. The home owner reported a large amount of money stolen from his residence. The report as well as a list of possible suspects will be forwarded to the Criminal Investigation Division (CID).

Deputy Jaclyn Skinner was dispatched to an Alba address. The party stated her ex-husband had taken their child from her residence after an argument. The party stated the father did not have over-night visitation. Skinner spoke with the father, who refused to meet with her. The party refused to file charges but wanted the incident documented.

Deputy Chandler, Deputy Cooper and an Alba police officer responded to FM 515 for a disturbance. The victim stated she and her boyfriend had been in an on and off again relationship for several years. She admitted they were in an argument but denied any physical contact. They spoke with the reporting party who stated she came home and heard the argument. She played a recording of the argument for the officers, and the victim could be heard saying when he hit her, he knocked her teeth out. Robert Keith Houston, 53, of Alba was arrested for assault by contact – family violence.

Deputy Brad Cox took a request to speak in reference to a theft. The party stated she responded to an ad on Facebook for a cell phone. She said she sent the seller the money through a mobile app. After the seller received the money, he started propositioning her and sending her inappropriate pictures. The reporting party wished to press charges against the man for the theft.

August 26

Deputy Cole Hudson responded to CR 4860 for a theft report. The victim stated an unknown person made entry onto his property and stole numerous items out of his storage building. The case will be forwarded to CID.

Sgt. Bailey and Deputy Cooper went to CR 3639 for a disturbance in progress. They spoke with a female who stated another victim and actor were inside. They went inside and found a male subject on the couch with visible injuries to his face. They also located another male lying down in a recliner. After speaking with all individuals at the location, Kenneth Lee Mortell, 29, of Big Sandy was arrested for assault causes bodily Injury – family violence.

Deputy LaDawn McGee was dispatched to Walnut St. The reporting party stated he had a Ditch Witch at a job site. When he arrived to the site, he observed the equipment had been damaged overnight. The case was forwarded to CID.

Deputy McGee responded to CR 2142 for a theft. The party told McGee that her daughter took $400 from her residence. McGee spoke with the suspect by phone, who advised she takes care of all of her mother’s affairs and that her mother is having memory problems. McGee spoke with the victim’s son who was at the location. He stated that his mother is having memory problems and does not believe his sister would ever take anything from their mother. The incident will be documented for future reference.

Deputy Chandler took a report of threats and possible criminal mischief from FM 779. The party stated his girlfriend’s cousin came to the residence and was possibly intoxicated. He tried to start a fight with the individuals at the scene. Before the suspect left, he cut the reporting party’s tires. The case will be forwarded to CID.

August 27

Deputy John Cooper was dispatched to PR 6964 for marijuana plants. The party stated her ex-husband was growing marijuana behind her house. Capt. Mike Chilson and Sgt. Billy Hill arrived and took possession of the plants. The plants were placed in evidence to be destroyed.

Deputy Andrew Morrison responded to PR 7852 for an inquest. The justice of the peace and a funeral home responded to the scene.

August 28

Deputy Linda Williams conducted a welfare check on FM 14. The party met her at the residence to let her in the gate. Williams knocked on the door and heard a female voice inside. She continued trying to make contact with the home owner and learned the woman had fallen and was in need of help. Forcible entry was made into the residence due to the urgent need for assistance inside. The homeowner was located on the floor and transported to the hospital for treatment.

Deputy Williams took a lobby call for a dog bite. The victim stated she went to a garage sale when a large number of dogs came out. The dogs were aggressive. As the victim attempted to get back to her vehicle, one of the dogs bit her twice on the leg. The dog’s owners were contacted and informed their dogs would be required to be quarantined and would have to provide proof of vaccination.

Deputy Williams was dispatched to CR 1700 for a theft report. The victim claimed someone made entry into his vehicle and stole a firearm and other items. The case will be forwarded for further investigation.

August 29

Deputy Jonah Croney and Sgt. Austin Milbourn responded to an inquest on CR 1406. Capt. Chilson was also contacted. The justice of the peace and funeral home were contacted.

Deputy Croney and Sgt. Milbourn were notified that a sexual assault victim was in the lobby wishing to make a report. The victim stated she was at Lake Holbrook when a male subject came over to her. She said they started drinking, and he then started making comments about raping her.  He then tried to tackle her and sexually assaulted her. The case will be forwarded to CID.

Deputies Corbin Hanner, Jonah Croney and Sgt. Milbourn assisted Quitman Police Department on a shots fired call.

August 30

Deputy Cole Hudson took a hit and run report on CR 2332. The victim stated he was struck by a vehicle while walking down the road. The victim refused medical assistance but stated one of the mirrors of the passing vehicle struck him on the arm. He did not recognize the vehicle but stated another vehicle was behind it and did not stop either. The incident was filed for documentation purposes.

Deputy Cox was dispatched to PR 7495 for a theft report. The party stated she had a motorcycle, and a friend of her brother’s wanted to do work in exchange for the motorcycle. Before any work was done, the individual took the motorcycle. The case will be forwarded to CID.

Deputy Matthew Cooper conducted a traffic stop on FM 14 for expired motor vehicle registration. Contact was made with the three occupants. Due to the behavior of the individuals, Cooper requested permission to search the vehicle. They denied consent, and Deputy McKenzie Chandler arrived with Sheriff’s Office K-9 Major. They did a perimeter sweep of the vehicle, and K-9 Major gave an alert. When the vehicle was searched, a fentanyl patch was found in the floorboard. Toby Barlow, 48, of Hawkins was arrested for possession of a controlled substance Penalty Group 1 less than one gram and an outstanding warrant.

August 31

Deputy Hudson responded to Hwy. 11 for an assault report. The party stated his girlfriend struck him in the head with a bat. He also stated she busted the windows of his camper. The case will be forwarded to CID.

Deputy Cooper was working patrol on FM 778 when he observed a vehicle with an expired registration sticker. When Cooper made contact with the driver, he observed an altered rifle sitting in the front seat.  Due to the alterations made to the firearm, it was a prohibited weapon. Upon seeing the rifle, the driver was asked to step out of the vehicle. When he did, Cooper observed a handgun between the driver seat and center console. The driver was asked if he was a convicted felon, and he stated he was. Drugs and other contraband were found in the vehicle as well. Kenny Weldon Lee, 49, of Mineola was arrested for unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, prohibited weapon and possession of a controlled substance Penalty Group 1 less than one gram.
