Winnsboro runs away from Mineola

Mineola girls fell behind district-leading Winnsboro early and trailed by double digits most of the game in a 65-28 loss last Thursday. The basketball game was rescheduled from last Tuesday due to weather.

The Lady Jackets finished their regular season at Chapel Hill Tuesday and needed a win to avoid a potential play-in game for the final district playoff spot with Quitman, tentatively set for Thursday in Winnsboro.

Mineola did get on the board first, but Winnsboro scored the next 15. The Lady Jackets actually outscored the Lady Raiders the rest of the quarter 9-5 to cut the lead to 20-11. Had a couple of the four missed threes fallen, it would have still been a game.

But the second quarter took care of any lingering questions. After a lull on both sides to open the period, Winnsboro scored 13 points unanswered, taking advantage of fast breaks and Mineola turn overs.

Mineola got only a Carmen Carrasco basket late in the period to avoid a shut out. It was 33-13 Winnsboro at the half.

Jayla Jackson opened the second half with a three for Mineola, which Winnsboro’s Faith Acker answered with a basket and foul shot. Jackson also closed Mineola’s scoring in the quarter with a three, and Mineola trailed 53-22.

She made three triples on the night to lead Mineola scoring with nine points.

Senior Mylee Fischer opened the fourth quarter with a basket after some nice ball movement. She ended her final home game with five points.

Sister Macee Fischer matched her with five points, as did Kyra Jackson, and Carrasco added four.

Acker led Winnsboro with 19 points. Kinlee Swanner and Faith Sechrist each had 10.
