Winnsboro girls outgun Mineola Lady Jackets

The Winnsboro Lady Raiders look to be continuing their hardcourt dominance, having dispatched the Mineola Lady Jackets, 68-22, last Friday.

Winnsboro did not come out and light the world on fire. In the first 2 minutes 20 seconds of the game, Winnsboro whistled two time-outs, as the Red Raider side received some pointed adjustments.

Winnsboro did wake-up a bit in that first quarter, but the Lady Jackets had matched them up well and were giving them a challenge.

The first quarter expired with Winnsboro leading 18-8. Mineola was competing, but despite causing just as many turnovers as they committed, it was the Lady Raiders who were finishing at the basket.

The Lady Jackets put some nice sequences together – Paris Spigner forced a 5-second turnover and Carmen Carrasco forced another by tying up the ball – but the Lady Raiders were just too practiced.

By the time the quarter came to an end, Winnsboro had clearly taken control.

The torrent that is recent Lady Raider basketball came in the second quarter. Winnsboro outscored Mineola 22-4 in the quarter, deciding the game.

The early instances when Mineola was able to generate open shots from the wing or by driving across the lane, simply evaporated. It didn’t help that the visiting Lady Jackets also had a bad night shooting.

The Lady Raiders scored at a 3:1 rate in the second half. Their offensive performance was characterized by points in transition and skill on the ball.

At 2-3 in district play, the Lady Jackets find themselves in fourth place. Winnsboro and Chapel Hill are yet undefeated in district while the Lady Bulldogs of Quitman are in third place.

The Lady Jackets host Chapel Hill Friday and Quitman Tuesday, Jan. 17.
