The Winnsboro Lady Raiders lived up to their lofty status as one of the premier Class 3A teams in the state as they scored early and often on the way to an impressive 82-26 district win over Quitman Friday. Ranked in the state’s top ten, the Lady Raiders pressure defense was in top form.
Lady Raider post Faith Acker ruled the lanes on both ends of the floor, but not without a battle from Quitman defenders Kaysi Parker, Reiny Luman, Carley Spears, Maddy Pence and Allie Berry.
Winnsboro raced to a 23-7 first quarter lead with Quitman getting a triple from Addie Marcee and four points from Luman. The Lady Raiders used a 24-6 second quarter to take a commanding 47-13 lead at the half.
The Lady Raiders continued their full court pressure defense in the third quarter holding Quitman to just five points while they scored 18 to take a 65-18 advantage into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter the Lady Bulldogs got eight points with Sadie Vander Schaaf (four points), Berry and Spears scoring for Quitman. Winnsboro put up 17 more points down the stretch to take home the victory.
The loss leaves the Lady Bulldogs with a 2-4 record in district action going to the second half of district play. Going into the final six games Winnsboro remains undefeated in district action. Winnsboro, Mt. Pleasant Chapel Hill, Mt. Vernon and Mineola are in the playoff spots as Quitman, Harmony and Winona fight to get in playoff contention.
After traveling to Mt. Vernon Tuesday, the Lady Bulldogs will be at home Friday against Highway 37 and Wood County rival Mineola.
