Winnsboro gains lopsided win over Alba-Golden
It was tough sledding for the Alba-Golden Panthers as they hosted the Winnsboro Red Raiders last Tuesday. The Panthers went down in defeat 60-26 against a talented Winnsboro side.
The game was a game of two halves. Although Winnsboro opened up a sizable lead in the first half, the game had a good mix of give and take. The Panthers pulled to within seven points of the Raiders early in the second quarter.
Alba-Golden had weathered the Winnsboro press in the opening minutes and broke the press with some regularity. Unfortunately, once the press was broken, the Panthers were unable to capitalize on the numerical advantages in the forecourt.
The second half was all Winnsboro as they went to a double-teaming, man-to-man press and created numerous turnovers – most of which were directly converted to points.
The battle on the boards favored the Raiders throughout the game, but the Panthers challenged each drive and each shot. To their credit, in a game in which they were overmatched, the Alba-Golden boys played hard every second.
Boedy Baker led the scoring for Alba-Golden, with Jack Patton, Blake Weissert, Dylan O’Quinn, and Jerry Skinner also contributing.
The Panthers will be embarking on a road trip post-Christmas. They play away games at Rains Dec. 29, at Hawkins Dec. 30 and at Cumby Jan. 12 before hosting Cooper on Friday, Jan. 15.
