The cool mornings and warm days announce the arrival of spring sports. In addition to the national pastime of baseball (and softball), spring ushers in track, golf and tennis, and the conclusion of soccer, powerlifting and basketball seasons.

Weather, spring sports heating up
The cool mornings and warm days announce the arrival of spring sports. In addition to the national pastime of baseball (and softball), spring ushers in track, golf and tennis, and the conclusion of soccer, powerlifting and basketball seasons.
As of Thursday, March 5, baseball and softball are in the middle of tournament season. Softball district play commences Tuesday, March 10. Alba-Golden will be at home for their district opener against the reigning state champion Rains Ladycats. Mineola will host Edgewood. The Lady Bulldogs of Quitman open their district play March 13 at home against Alba-Golden. Softball district play runs through April 24.
Baseball district play starts March 17 and concludes May 1. Quitman opens at home against Grand Saline while Mineola opens at Rains. Alba-Golden begins district play March 20 at Grand Saline.
Alba-Golden, Mineola and Quitman all host track meets this season. Alba-Golden stages the Ferrell Wright Relays on Thursday, March 19. Quitman High School stages the Quitman Relays Thursday, April 2, while Mineola will welcome competitors to the Yellowjacket Relays on the same day. The district meet will be conducted April 9-10 at Mineola.
Monday is a traditional golf day on high school calendars. Quitman hosts a tourney at Land’s End on Monday, March 16, while Alba-Golden hosts a tourney at the same venue on March 23. The district golf tournament will be held Monday, March 30 at the Links at Land’s End.
Alba-Golden is holding a tennis tournament on Friday, March 6 as is Quitman on Tuesday, March 10. District tennis will be played in Edgewood on April 1-2.
The boys regional powerlifting meet will be conducted this Friday at Malakoff. The girls competition will be held Saturday at Fairfield High School.
The Mineola soccer team is well into the second half of its district schedule. They have remaining home dates on Friday, March 6 against Chapel Hill and Friday, March 20 against Kemp. Soccer bi-district action will be played on March 28.
