The North and East Texas Press Association doled out awards during their 92nd Annual Convention this weekend in Granbury.

Contest judges chose the Wood County Monitor as first place General Excellence and first place in Sports Writing.

The paper also won third places in News Photo, Columns by Larry Tucker, Editorials by Doris Newman, Sports Coverage, Sports Photos and Sweepstakes.

Not only did Tucker’s and Newman’s work contribute to the awards, but sports reporter Quinton Lilley’s work was also part of the paper’s 2017 entries.

Publisher Joyce Hathcock, and the newspaper’s production support crew in Kilgore, Charlotte Smith, Katy Mirtz-Myers, David Luna and Ben Marmolejo-Najera, contributed their expertise to the awards, especially the General Excellence designation.

Hathcock said it is good to be recognized by our peers in the newspaper industry and she is proud of the awards for her hard-working staff.
