State meet qualifiers headed to capital
Wood County athletes head to Austin this week to compete in the state track and field championships at the University of Texas, and two have posted the best performances among the nine qualifiers from the regional meets.
The Conference 3A events take place Thursday at Mike Myers Stadium, along with 4A events. The 2A events are on Friday, which will include Jake Hallman of Alba-Golden in the 100-meter dash. His event is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. His 11.22 time is eighth best among the nine competitors, with a top time of 10.61 seconds.
Mineola freshman Olivia Hughes battled Pilot Point’s Addision Hite in the 800 meters at regional, and their times are the two best heading into the state contest, with Hughes posting a 2:18.26. They run at 5:20 p.m. Thursday.
Hughes is also a part of the Mineola 1,600-meter relay team, which secured the ninth wildcard spot after placing third at regional. Their 4:03.61 is eighth best. The team also includes Kozbie Riley, Carmen Carrasco and Shylah Kratzmeyer. Their event is at 8:20 p.m.
They will be followed by the Quitman boys who posted a seventh-best 3:23.8 in the relay. Their regional rivals, Atlanta, come in with the best time at 3:22.37. The team includes Cason Johnson, Dalton Crowson, Brandon Jimenez and Jack Tannebaum.
Quitman’s Brooklyn Marceee is a dual qualifier, and she leads the field in the pole vault at 12’6”. Her chief competitor appears to be Joy Sherwood of SA Great Hearts Monte Vista, who comes in a 12” but is the defending state champion, clearing 12’9” last year to edge Mineola’s Abbie Kratzmeyer. They vault at 11 a.m.
Marcee also earned a spot in the 100-meter hurdles with a 15.65, eighth best against a top time of 14:35. She runs at 5:45 p.m.
