Quitman ISD had to address a threat on a social media post involving two junior high students last Thursday. A letter was posted online and a hard copy sent home with each junior high student addressing the situation.

Superintendent Rhonda Turner explained what happened. “We are thankful a concerned parent made a report to the school. The posting was over a month old and the reported date that the incident was said to occur had already passed. While we will never know if the students involved had any real intent on causing harm, what we do know is there were implications to such post,” Turner said. “I plead with our community members, parents and guardians to spend time talking to the youth you have contact with. First, let them know they are loved and that they matter. Second, make sure they understand the severity of making threats against others. There are real and life-changing consequences to these actions. I want to encourage parents to be aware of what kids are storing on their phones and posting to social media.”

Turner added there were no weapons found. “At no time were there weapons on the campus. The report came in, and within minutes the students involved were in the office of our school resource officer. The case has been turned over to local law enforcement, and as always, the district is cooperating with the investigation,” Turner noted.
