Second half spells difference in Quitman loss to Como-Pickton

The Quitman Lady Bulldogs basketball teams went back into action Dec. 28 in mid-day games at Como-Pickton. The junior varsity team recorded a 26-14 win, while the varsity fell to the host Lady Eagles 40-28.

The varsity girls played one of their better halves of basketball against Como-Pickton Monday. Lindsey Hornaday opened the Lady Bulldogs scoring with a nice drive after securing an Eagle turnover.

Another strong drive by Kynlee Love, a Hornaday jumper from the wing and an Ava Burroughs follow-up tied the game at 9 as the initial quarter drew to a close. Como-Pickton scored twice in the last seconds of the quarter, taking a 13-9 lead.

The second quarter saw some quality basketball from the Lady Bulldogs. The team was playing true team basketball, and their efforts were rewarded by good scoring opportunities and timely defense.

Ashley Davis hit a nice jumper to join the scorers, and Burroughs put back three offensive rebounds to make the score 20-18, Como-Pickton, at the half.

The tightly-competed game everyone expected in the second half simply did not materialize. The Lady Eagles came out and held the ball for over a minute in the offensive zone. Burroughs was whistled for a dubious pushing foul after securing a rebound. Como-Pickton scored on the resultant possession.

Then, in a flash, the home side turned over Quitman twice with the press. The resulting two additional quick scores put Como-Pickton up by eight and changed the entire complexion of the game.

The deficit changed Quitman’s game as they hurried their play and committed errors as a result. The Lady Eagles opened as much as a 13-point lead late in the third quarter. Despite a surge of energy provided with the insertion of Quitman’s Carley Spears, the Lady Bulldogs could never recapture the momentum.

Hornaday’s performance was noteworthy. She provided on-court leadership throughout the game and was around the ball at all times.

The next opportunity to watch the Lady Bulldogs is Saturday, Jan. 2 as they host Chapel Hill. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
