Scurry-Rosser Wildcats too much for Quitman

An impressive passing game led the Scurry-Rosser Wildcats to a 42-13 win over Quitman last Friday night. The Wildcats scored early and often in the second quarter, taking a 34-7 lead by halftime.

Not to be denied, the Bulldogs fought back hard, but the Wildcat lead was too much to overcome. The Bulldogs played excellent defense in the second half, holding the Wildcats in check the rest of the game.

After Scurry-Rosser had taken a 34-0 lead in the second quarter, Quitman’s Ford Tannebaum took a kick-off and ran straight up the middle 80 yards for a touchdown to bring hope to the Bulldog faithful.

After a Wildcat score made it 42-7 in the fourth quarter, the Quitman offense came alive and put together a seven-play, 65-yard drive which ended on tough running back Wyatt Hightower’s 38-yard run through the Wildcat defense. That score made it the final 42-13.

Scurry-Rosser quarterback Tanner Vaughn proved to be the difference in the game. Vaughn was on mark in the passing game, and when rushed by Quitman defenders, he was able to make plays on the run.

“Their quarterback (Vaughn) is the real deal,” Head Coach Shane Webber said. “We did a good job against their running game, but we know we need to work on pass defense and do a better job there.”

Quitman held the Wildcat rushing game to 100 yards.

The Bulldog running game saw Hightower with 60 yards on 11 carries and Mason Reynolds with 60 yards on 10 carries, both nearing six yards a tote.

Webber said he did see some positives, but the negatives need to be addressed to get ready for a talented Queen City team Friday.

“There were some positive moments, but unfortunately on defense we were out of position a lot,” he said. “We missed a lot of tackles we normally would make. The positive in the game was our energy level being there the entire game. It’s like I said earlier, we might not win, but we want the other team to know they played a tough Quitman team, and our kids did show that Friday night. The biggest thing for me is that our kids never stopped playing hard.”

The Bulldogs recorded three sacks of Vaughn by Bulldog defenders Garin Kisinger, Gavin Hammock and Ethan Presley.

“We still have to work on our tackling,” Webber said. “You have to wrap up and not give those runners a chance to get loose. We might not win all the games we have left, but we want to be a team that regardless of the score, you had to fight your rear end off when you play Quitman. We are not going to be an easy game for anybody.”

The Bulldogs play at Queen City Friday night with kick off set for 7:30 p.m.
