Quitman’s rally too late to overcome Mt. Vernon
The Quitman Lady Bulldogs rallied from a 5-0 deficit but lost to Mt. Vernon 9-5 last week in district play.
Quitman was held scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when they put three runs on the board, but Mt. Vernon scored four more runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 9-3 lead. The Lady Bulldogs were not done. They fought back to score two more in the top of the final inning, but it was not enough.
Quitman had the same number of hits, seven, as the Lady Tigers. Mt. Vernon used three home runs to take the advantage over the Lady Bulldogs. Kennedi Elmore did a good job on the mound giving up the seven hits and striking out seven batters and walking just one. Only four of the nine runs were earned.
Kynlee Love had two hits to lead Quitman in that department. Love, Elmore, Alexis O’Neal, Maddy Pence and Ashley Davis each had a run batted in. Pence had a double.
The Lady Bulldogs will be at home this Friday with Wood County rival Mineola. It will also be Teacher Appreciation Night for Quitman.
Quitman will finish the season next week with an April 20 contest at Winona followed by a home game April 23 against Harmony. The final home game against Harmony is also Senior Night for the Lady Bulldogs.
