Quitman wins as Mineola rally falls short

The Quitman Lady Bulldogs held off a furious Mineola rally in the late innings, scoring the winning run in the bottom of eight for a 9-8 district win.

Mineola got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning when leadoff batter Kenleigh Aguirre walked, stole second base and scored on a fielder’s choice from Jaycee Smith.

Quitman came back with a seven-run bottom of the first to take a 7-1 advantage. The Lady Bulldogs banged out six hits including a double by Kennedi Elmore and a triple by speedy Ashley Davis. Quitman’s first six batters got on base and scored while the Lady Bulldogs sent 11 batters to the plate. Quitman added a run in the bottom of the second to go up 8-1.

The Lady Jackets came back strong, scoring a run in the top of the third inning and adding three runs in the fifth and seventh innings to knot the score at 8-8.

Down 8-5 in the seventh inning, Mineola got a single from Aguirre. The Lady Jackets were able to load the bases and score runs on a pair of passed balls to put the game into extra innings.

Elmore came on in relief of Alexis O’Neal in the seventh inning and in the top of the eighth inning she shut down the Lady Jackets with no runs. Elmore struck out two and Addie Marcee had a put-out from second base.

In the extra inning, teams are allowed to put a runner on second base to start the extra frame. Reiny Luman flew out on a deep hit to centerfield, but Elmore lined a hit to left field scoring Peyton Kruckner with the winning run.

Quitman registered 17 hits while Mineola had nine.
