Quitman plays host to cross country meet

Near perfect running conditions greeted the athletes at the 2019 Quitman Bulldog Invitational cross country meet, Sept. 19. Overcast skies, light winds, and a level course produced excellent times and competition.

Quitman boys cross country coach Jim Reid explained how important it is to host an event like the invitational.

“It gives the school and especially the athletes a chance to perform in front of friends and family,” he explained. “It is just nice not to have to climb aboard a bus as well,” he continued.  Reid estimated that almost 280 runners competed on the day.

The starting line was in the open area between the recently-redone track and the new softball field.  Looking toward the starting line from the course, the work on construction of the new tennis courts was fully underway. Positive changes to the Quitman facilities were obvious.

Perennial cross country achievers Saltillo High School captured the boys’ title. Pittsburg and Tatum placed second and third. In the varsity girls division Pittsburg claimed the crown with Edgewood and Tatum finishing second and third. The host boys team finished sixth and the girls eighth.

Running for Quitman were Aiden Corrier, Brandon Jiminez, Jace Reid, Mason Reynolds, Matthew Smith and Jack Tannenbaum.  Lady Bulldogs Alexa Flores, Citlaly Flores, Lizzy Herring, Cristina Ramirez, Joanna Santiago and Bonnie VanderSchaaf composed the girls varsity team.

Although Alba-Golden did not field full teams, a number of Panther athletes competed. Morgan Dorner, Justina Peterson and Jasmine Weed ran for the varsity girls. Kyle Kennedy and Michael Kumm competed in boys varsity.

The Bulldogs’ next meet is Oct.3 in Lindale, while the Lady Bulldogs will next compete Oct. 3 at Saltillo.
