Quitman, Mineola boys fall from playoffs
The Quitman Bulldogs and Mineola Yellowjackets lost their area round boys basketball playoffs Friday night to end their seasons.
Mineola fell to Jefferson 56-52 in overtime at Hallsville while Quitman was eliminated by Waskom 51-44 at Union Grove.
Quitman trailed 35-33 going into the final period, with Waskom pulling away down the stretch after the Bulldogs got within 38-37.
Mineola and Jefferson battled back and forth to a 45-45 tie in regulation.
Mineola led 49-48 in the OT period before Jefferson scored seven straight points to take control.
A three-pointer made it 55-52 but Mineola was called for a foul on the play which led to a four-point margin.
Jefferson and Waskom will meet in the regional quarterfinals next week.
In the girls regional tournament, Winnsboro defeated Ponder 86-56 and will face Edgewood, a winner over Mt. Vernon, in Saturday's regional final with a trip to the state tourney at stake.
