Quitman mayor addresses community
Quitman Mayor Randy Dunn has reached out to Quitman residents concerning the ongoing battle due to the coronavirus pandemic spreading throughout the state and country.
“How much can the world change in a few weeks? A lot! I appreciate our citizens doing the best they can to prevent spreading the virus. It is new to all of us and we learn something nearly every day, like ‘social distancing.’ I encourage everyone to be thoughtful of their neighbors and not purchase more than you need. It is easy to panic but does not help anyone,” Dunn said. “Check on your neighbors, especially those that are in a higher risk category, and offer to pick necessities up for them while you are out. Just a call to check in with them would brighten their day.”
According to Dunn the city will proceed with Spring Clean-Up Days March 27 and 28.
“Since students are not in school, let’s all work hard to clean up around our place and carry it to the city yard located at the west end of Cliff St.,” Dunn noted. “This activity will allow you the opportunity to get outside without creating any risk of spreading the virus. When you pull into the yard our city crews will direct you to the correct container. Everyone needs to remain in their vehicle until you pull up to the container and unload. This will allow social distancing to prevent potential spread of the virus.”
Dunn added his support for local businesses. “I want all business owners to know that the city will be working everyday to expedite any relief that is included in the federal government relief program. I encourage our citizens to think about our businesses. If you are able to purchase birthday or Christmas gifts in advance it would be a huge boost for our businesses,” Dunn said. “They will be more than happy to issue gift cards that can be used when this is all behind us and you can get out and shop. Our restaurants are all offering takeout curbside service and deliveries to a location in order to prevent gathering concerns. Order a meal when you can. We can help our town more than you may have thought.”
The council plans to meet Thursday and consider postponing the May city election.
Dunn also issued a disaster declaration on Monday which the council plans to consider extending at Thursday’s meeting.
