The Quitman Lady Bulldogs dispatched the Mineola Lady Jackets in a three game sweep in Quitman last Tuesday.

The match should have been one of best of the year, but rather it was marred by many unforced errors on both sides.

In the end, the Lady Bulldogs brought more of their game to the court and stymied the Lady Jackets all night.

The first five points of the match told most of the story. Mineola committed four unforced errors to start the game. Quitman added a fifth point with a nicely-placed drop shot.  Three offensive scores by the Lady Bulldogs were then followed by two more Mineola miscues.

Quitman’s Ava Burroughs paced the Lady Bulldogs. She had three kills, one drop shot, one block and two aces in game one.

Game two should not have been close, as the Lady Jackets generated only four offensive points in the game: two kills by Tahjae Black and one kill apiece from Kaitlyn Burrel and Valerie Garcia.

Quitman committed 16 unforced errors in game two. The fact that they won this game, despite the errors, indicated that almost all the activity was being generated by the Lady Bulldogs.

Jentri Jackson played a great game, scoring with five kills and a drop shot. The 25-20 game two win saw Quitman making great use of short sets at the net.

The final game was the most evenly-played of the match. Both teams limited their mistakes and began to groove with their offenses. Mineola pushed out to an early lead behind some nice play by Sabria Dean and Meghan Brewington, but the Lady Bulldogs fought back to tie the game at 14.

The Lady Jackets opened a four-point advantage 20-16, but could not close. Quitman scored four offensive points and benefitted from five Mineola errors to record the win. Lucy Brannon, Julia Simpkins and Maddy Whitehurst excelled in the closing minutes.

The Lady Bulldogs were surely smarting from their recent defeat at Edgewood, and they played relaxed with great movement and anticipation.

The Lady Jackets seemed handcuffed most of the night, in a performance which was out of character for them.

For Quitman Jentri Jackson had 13 digs and 13 kills; Ava Burroughs had 12 kills and 2 aces; Shelby Hayes had 31 assists and 12 digs; Julia Simpkins had seven digs and four aces; Lucy Brannon had seven digs, four kills and a pair of aces; Maddy Whitehurst had five digs and three kills; Brooklyn Marcee and Alexis O’Neal four digs each.

Quitman had a bye Friday and returned to action Tuesday at home against Lone Oak.
