I am going out on a limb and officially declaring the arrival of Spring! Wood County is now showcasing its famous dogwoods, azaleas and wisteria. Many other flowering trees and shrubs can be viewed at the Quitman Arboretum. Look for the orange crossvine on the metal arbor at the front of the water-wise garden. Magnolias, bridal wreath, native purple verbena and lady banks rose are a few of the other “stunners” that make you go home and wonder why you haven’t planted those selections in your own yard.

Please join us on any Wednesday. The arboretum is located at the back of Hogg Park. Our volunteers will be more than happy to take you on a short tour and help identify plants you may not be familiar with. Thanks to our many extra hands. The spring leaf roundup is just about completed with huge piles raked for pickup. The roses have been pruned and are showing off their first flush of blooms.

We are gearing up for the Spring Plant Sale. You will find a wide selection of annuals, perennials, native plants, trees, shrubs and a few more surprises tucked in here and there. Our able sales force will be joined by some Wood County Master Gardeners this year. They will be able to provide you with information about the suitability of a plant for a specific location.

Please check our website and Facebook page from time to time. Watch for news about the Plant Sale, Mother’s Day Brunch and Photo Contest.

Once again, please feel free to join us Wednesday.
