The Quitman Lady Bulldogs held off Alba-Golden at Ballard Memorial Gym last Tuesday to record a 36-30 victory over their Wood County rivals.
Both the teams used full court pressure to cause numerous turnovers, leading to easy buckets after steals. Cold shooting by both squads led to the low scoring contest. Quitman missed several easy shots under the basket and A-G continued to fight back throughout the contest.
The teams battled back and forth with Quitman’s 34-26 lead midway through the final quarter the largest lead of the game. In that decisive final frame, Quitman freshman Sadie Vander Schaaf made a steal and drove the middle of the lane to give Quitman a 36-29 advantage. That bucket was followed by Lady Bulldog junior post Kaysi Parker blocking two consecutive Lady Panther shots to thwart A-G’s comeback efforts.
The game started slow with Quitman taking a 7-5 lead after one quarter. In the second quarter the Lady Panthers kept pace with Quitman hitting on five of seven free throws. The Panthers started off the quarter with a triple by Jessie Mitchell to go up 8-7. A free throw by Alba-Golden’s Kylie Kennedy gave the Lady Panthers an 11-9 lead. Quitman was able to tie the game at 11-11 on freshmen Allie Berry’s 15 foot jump shot.
Quitman went up 15-12 on a steal and score by Maddy Pence, but A-G fought back with Casie Lennon hitting a free throw and a bucket making it 15-15. Free throws by Quitman’s Reiny Luman and Berry left the score at intermission 17-15 in favor of the Lady Bulldogs.
Parker’s put back on a missed shot put Quitman in the lead at 19-15 but A-G came back on a pair of Kennedy free throws. Pence hit a free throw with 4:10 left in the third quarter to put Quitman up 23-19. A-G’s Kaylee Anglin made a bucket to close the gap to 23-21. A bank shot on a long three pointer from the top of the key by Carley Spears gave Quitman a 28-22 cushion. After Parker made another score after getting an offensive rebound making it 30-23, Lady Panther Mitchell hit a trey as the quarter ended to make it a 30-26 deficit going into the final stanza.
The final quarter was a rough and tumble affair with both teams scoring only six points each leaving Quitman ahead 36-30 at the final buzzer.
Parker led Quitman with 14 points while Anglin had 10 for the Lady Panthers.
